It could just be he was doing what he wanted out of self-interest, but having been through so much with the Republic, I can't just accept that he just threw all of that out the window to serve an Empire. That being said, being that high of a rank in the republic, and for the duration of the Clone Wars having served side-by-side with the Jedi (most notably having served in several battles and campaigns with Anakin Skywalker), I'm curious as to why someone of that position would have given up his loyalty and values for the Republic and instead chose to serve the new Empire. Although he commanded them, he himself was not a clone, but a seasoned veteran in the Republic's Navy, therefore we at least know that his later decisions were not the result of manipulation via an inhibitor chip.
